On June 11, 2023, the original Jurrasic Park film turns THIRTY!
The idea for the film was conceived thirty-three years ago when Universal Pictures and Steven Speilberg's Amblin Entertainment purchased the rights to the Jurassic Park novel by Michael Chrichton... before the book was even published! The book was very successful, and obviously, so was the film! If you ask anyone, they'd probably agree that the original Jurrasic Park movie was their favorite of the six-film franchise.
It's mine for sure!
In my little retro circle, including on The Gnarly 90s Podcast, we've all kind of mentioned a few times recently that Jurassic Park really helped revive dinosaurs in not only children's imaginations but overall pop culture as well.
Before Jurrasic Park and its slew of kid-friendly merchandise, I can only remember dinosaurs being something from a few library books or the cheap plastic toys only at the drug store. Once the film debuted, you couldn't turn around without seeing something covered in dinosaurs: toys, video games, bedding, clothes, school supplies, and more. The same remains today, although to a slightly lesser extent than fresh off the movie in 1993.
When Jurassic Park hit theaters in the summer of 1993, it was revolutionary for its practical effects and animatronics while being one of the pioneers in the use of CGI technology. From Spielberg's breathtaking visuals of these ancient creatures to the star-studded cast, Jurrasic Park has remained a fan favorite for multiple generations. With five sequels, a handful of video games, and endless merchandise, our fascination with these prehistoric creatures lives on.
For you theme park fans, Universal Orlando will allow guests to step through the famous Jurassic Park gates for an immersive experience that celebrates the anniversary. With rides like "Jurassic Park River Adventure" and "Jurassic World VelociCoaster," Universal also promises special snacks, drinks, a walking history lesson, themed rooms, and unique photo ops that recreate iconic scenes from the first film. I'm sure there will also be more than enough dino-themed merchandise available for purchase.
There are many ways to celebrate this special anniversary, but today, I thought it would be fun to rip open another pack of Topps Jurassic Park trading cards! Two years ago, I opened another pack, which you can find by clicking the link, or you can always visit the Retro Scans section to find it along with many other old trading card scans. For this special occasion, we'll take another crack at it and hope for some more great images!
I hope you enjoy these old trading cards. If you're like me, go ahead and throw on the movie later tonight to enjoy the film all over again! I'll certainly be doing so.
