Boy, that was a great Daytona 500 weekend, wasn't it?! An exciting start to the season that has me pumped up for next week!
One of this site's most often searched-for (and read) articles fits right in with our motorsports theme for February!
I had often wondered where the phrase came from and where I had first heard it as a child. So, as I typically do here on YesterYear, I set off on the interwebs looking for answers. And boy, howdy, I sure did.
The roots of the catchphrase go all the way back to the late great racing announcer Jan Gabriel and the 1960s!
I don't want to spoil it any further, so please CLICK HERE to read (or re-read) where the famous phrase "Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!!" originated from!

Wow. I’m not a big racing fan. I don’t have anything against it - it just wasn’t really a part of my childhood. It was just one of those things I knew existed, but didn’t actually follow.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I DO remember that “Sunday, Sunday, Sunday” phrase (don’t ask me how). In fact, it’s stuck in my head now! Thanks a lot, Jeff…
As for its history, I had no idea about anything you covered in the article, so it was all new information to me. It does made me sad to hear that all those small tracks closed down. It’s like that for a lot of things from the past that we just took for granted back in the day, but (now that we are old) look back and realize that it was a very special thing that’s never coming back.
That’s why I like your site and your articles. It collects and saves information about a lot of the things that are like that in our lives. As time goes on, this information is going to be harder and harder to come by. Keep up the great work, Jeff.
Now I gotta try get the “Sunday, Sunday, Sunday” stuff out of my head. It was nostalgic for the first few minutes… now it’s getting a little irritating.
Thanks for mentioning my site collects and save information... thats one of the major reasons I do it! I often try to write about stuff I remember (or vaguely remember) and that hasn't been covered to death on the internet. Of course, there's a lot of stuff many more people than me have written about, but some of this stuff there's only little bits and pieces on random message boards, and like this article or the Nick at Nite Block Party Summer one, one of the main goals was to compile everything into one spot.
ReplyDeleteAnd if you think its irritating having something stuck in your head for a little while... try being in my head with all of this stuff floating around all the time! :)
