Retro Scans: The McDonaldland 500 featuring Bill Elliott

To wrap up our motorsports and NASCAR-themed month, I opened a pack of trading cards I've been holding on to for years. There's no time like the present, right?

This 1996 "Adventures of Ronald McDonald" series features real-life NASCAR driver Bill Elliott, who at the time drove the #96 Ford Thunderbird, sponsored by McDonald's.

The Internet provides little information about this set of cards aside from a few completion checklists.  A few years ago, I believe I received this particular pack in a monthly subscription box from Dinosaur Dracula, although I'm willing to bet I have a few more packs stashed away in my basement trading card bin.

Only 50 cards were made available for this series, which was part of an "ongoing series of episodes featuring Ronald McDonald and the McDonaldland characters."

Each bright and colorful card includes fun images on the front and a continuing story on the back.  On a beautiful picnic day, the McDonaldland gang discovers they must help Bill Elliott chase down that awful Hamburglar and win the McDonaldland 500!

Twenty-five image/story cards are included in the set, along with twelve "racing team puzzle set" cards, three racing team stickers, and three unique "Bill Elliot Racing Tips" cards.

According to Nick Cicierga, who calls himself a professional trading card collector in his YouTube video on the McDonaldland 500 cards, said these cards were purchased at McDonald's or included in Happy Meals.  Complete sets are hard to come by, but in 2018, he purchased a full set for $80, so take that for what you will.

Today, individual packs are readily available on eBay, although you may need to buy several to complete the set.

  1. Uh, Jeff. I know that’s just Ronald McDonald and I don’t normally have a clown-phobia (coulrophobia - I looked it up), but… that’s a freaky looking clown on those cards.

If I have nightmares tonight, it’s your fault.

  2. Sorry it's taken so long to respond, we've all had a bout of both types of flu (A/B) AND food poisoning... so it's been a rough few weeks.

Anyway, I've always been terrified of clowns. Just plain creepy! Of course, watching Killer Klowns from Outer Space at 5 or 6 years old probably didn't help things!
