Born in the '80s. Child of the '90s.
Growing up during the late 80s, 90s, and into the early 00s, I truly had a wonderful childhood and really enjoyed being a kid. I don't think I'm out of line to say my generation was the last "free" generation before we all became tied to the internet and social media. We were the final "pre-digital" generation and can remember life before living "online."
My generation witnessed much change in the world as we grew up, often not for the better, so it's no wonder so many of us enjoy reminiscing about "the good old days" and long for what we consider to be a better time. These days, I also spend quite a bit of energy and time thinking about how I can create a similar, unforgettable childhood for my own child.
In the Fall of 2019, I entered a essay contest on one of the internet's best nostalgia sites, The Retro Network. I had never written anything before, but after submitting an article on the great line of toys based on the 1990 film Dick Tracy, I had decided that, win or lose, I would continue writing on my own. I enjoyed the research and the writing and wanted a way to document memories of events from my childhood, both personal and pop culture.
And with that, YesterYear Retro was born on October 9, 2019.
I ended up winning that essay contest, and I'm proud to say that along with this website, I'm a small contributor to The Retro Network website. You'll find most of my work here, but occasionally I'll pop up on The Retro Network or elsewhere.
Here at YesterYear, I try to offer informative written tributes to what made my childhood so great. My hope is that this site serves as not only written documentation of times gone by but a memory jogger for myself... and YOU, the reader! I love getting emails from readers saying, "I had totally forgotten about this!" or "I never knew that happened!" An even bigger treat for me is when a reader emails a question about something from their childhood, and I help them 'spark' a long-lost memory!
By the way, I'm Jeff.
I grew up just north of New York City, and after almost 20 years on Long Island, I've recently moved to New Hampshire. I'm married to a beautiful, brilliant woman I met in college. Those days seem like just yesterday but are already "way back when." I'm excited to watch our child grow and develop memories she'll create for herself. At the very least, I'm happy to have someone to share my "old" memories with!
Enjoy the site and the road trip down memory lane!
